Open Access week at GSU Library

DSC02280We observed Open Access Week at Georgia State for (I think) the first time this year. Our Digital Repository Services Librarian Amy Elliott organized a series of workshops for faculty this week, and we kind of blogged the hell out of it on the library's website.

I contributed a short post this morning about why OA should matter to undergraduates, and plugging the Colonial Academic Alliance Undergraduate Research Journal, a multi-institutional OA journal hosted by the GSU Library.

I'm really pleased that GSU is actively advocating for OA now. It's something I've personally believed in for several years and it's cool to see my institution stepping up. (The recent copyright lawsuit has brought access issues like OA to the attention of more people on campus, which is a positive side effect of a bad situation.)

I'll end by co-signing a statement that my friend Amy Buckland made a month ago on her blog -- I decided this a while back, but it's a good public statement to make during OA Week:

"from now on, i will only review articles for, sit on editorial boards of, and publish in, open access journals."

Right on, Amy -- me too.

April 15: panel discussion on GA Library Education

On April 15, next Wednesday at 2pm, I'm participating in a panel discussion on library graduate schools and distance learning at the GSU library.  We no longer have a library school in Atlanta -- the only one in Georgia now is at Valdosta State, four hours south of Atlanta -- so most Atlantans do some form of distance ed for their MLIS programs.

I'll be talking about my experiences earning my degree via the Florida State distance ed program, along with three current MLIS students from other programs.  Details on the GSU Library blog if you're interested in coming!

Job News

This morning I officially accepted an offer from the GSU Library to become their new Instruction Librarian for User Education Technologies.  I am absolutely thrilled about the opportunity.  I worked at GSU for a long time in various capacities previously to coming to Emory, and I got my undergrad degree there.  In a way it feels like going home after a long absence.

If I could have written the job description myself it would be damn close to my new job.  I'm really impressed with what I've seen of their new library, and I already know I'll have some fantastic new colleagues.  I can't wait.
