journalArticle Harrison Mary Summerton Stephanie Peters Karen EMPLOYEES -- Training of England Libraries Library employees LIBRARY resources MANCHESTER (England) STUDENT library assistants Endnote Training for Academic Staff and Students: The Experience of the Manchester Metropolitan University Library This article describes how the Manchester Metropolitan University Library delivers EndNote training to its academic staff and students through hands-on workshops and online tutorials. As the demand is user-led and the response extremely positive, the Library considers the provision of EndNote training as analogous to a ‘Trojan horse’ that allows the Library welcomed and unchallenged into the camp of the user. The Library has used the opportunity strategically and, consequently, has benefited in a number of ways, including improved communication with academic staff and increased awareness of library resources on the part of users. A short literature review is provided. Citations (References); Bibliographies; Computer Software; Internet; Library Automation; Higher Education Citation Generators: Generating Bibliographies for the Next Generation Librarians are frequently consulted about proper citation formats and support the use of PC-based personal bibliographic citation management programs, such as EndNote, often used by faculty and graduate students. Recently, free or inexpensive Web-based tools have been developed that create citations and format bibliographies. The Dorothy Hill Physical Sciences and Engineering Library at the University of Queensland taught students from three engineering courses how to use RefWorks to manage project references and to create team-based bibliographies. One team member created the account, all collected references, and one created the bibliography. In-text citations were done manually. Students could immediately see the relevance of RefWorks in the library class when they began finding information and creating the bibliography for their projects. Despite the far from perfect bibliographies produced, librarians are optimistic that with a few changes to the teaching of RefWorks, students' referencing skills can be substantially improved.
